The Kennedy Half Dollar coin was first minted in 1964. The coin is still presently being minted, though not for general circulation. The coin has two designers. The obverse was designed by Gilroy Roberts while the reverse was designed by Frank Gasparro. The coin features President John F. Kennedy with the word "LIBERTY" around the top of the coin. The reverse features the Seal of the President of the United States.

A Bicentennial edition of the coin was minted in 1975 and 1976. The reverse of this coin features Independence Hall in Philadelphia and was designed by Seth Huntington. The mint mark originally appeared below the eagle's left talon on the reverse. Beginning in 1968, the mint mark was moved to the obverse between the second and third number of date below Kennedy's neck.

The Kennedy Half Dollar coin has been minted in the following mints: Philadelphia (no mint mark from 1964-1979, P from 1980 on), Denver (D) and San Francisco (S). All coins minted in San Francisco are proofs except for one uncirculated set.
