Standing Liberty Quarter

The Standing Liberty Quarter was minted from 1916 to 1930. The coin was designed by Herman Atkins MacNeil. There were two types of the Standing Liberty Quarter that were produced. Type I, which was minted during 1916 and 1917, has Liberty on the obverse side. She carries a shield in one hand and an olive branch in the other. This obverse design is very rare because it features Liberty with a bare breast. The reverse side of the coin features an eagle in flight.

Type II was released in 1917 and was minted through the end of the production run in 1930. Liberty's breast was covered in this version of the coin. Three stars were also added under the eagle on the reverse. The design was supposedly changed due to a public outcry over the bare breast in the Type I coin.

The Type I versions of this coin are quite rare, especially for 1916 when only around 50,000 were minted. The problem with the Type I coins is the date was printed too high on the coin and easily wore off. This was later changed in the Type II redesign but a pristine 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter is highly sought after by collectors and very valuable.
